
Adult Services Librarian - Haverford Township Free Library
Haverford Township Free Library is one of the largest of the 28 Delaware County Libraries (DCL) and is a vital and active leader within the library community. Position Definition:
Under the direction of the Adult Services Manager, the Adult Services Librarian assists in providing reference and technology services for all library customers and staff with a concentration on adult services. This includes resources, programs, and services to meet the needs of the adult population in accordance with Haverford Township Free Library’s (HTFL) mission, vision, and objectives. This position requires a schedule which would include day, evening and weekend hours.
Primary Responsibilities:
Customer Service
● Provide direct public service to patrons at the reference desk and assist staff as necessary in other departments.
● Answer questions from customers/staff, checks reference email accounts, follows through with bookings/returns of specialized materials, completes Access PA requests, gives public computer assistance as needed, answers phones and completes various duties as they arise both at the desk and on the floor.
● Teach various basic technology skills by appointment to customers needing instruction.
● Educate and assist customers in the selection and use of library material and technology.
● Handle problem situations professionally and as required by HTFL policies.
Collections
● Assume collection development and maintenance tasks as assigned.
● Create reading lists and organize displays.
Programs and Events
● Assist with library outreach services/events/programs as requested.
● Participate in short-term and long-range planning for reference and adult services programs and assessment of library services.
Technological Responsibilities
● Assist with the Library’s population of servers, desktops, handheld computing devices, and related technologies, etc. for use by the public and staff.
● Assist with the implementation of current and new technologies that facilitate Library use and information access for staff and library users.
Membership, Continuing Education and Meetings
● Participate in professional library organizations and attend continuing education workshops, conferences and webinars.
Additional Duties
● Work on special Adult Services and IT projects as assigned by the Adult Services Manager and Library administration.
● Acts as in-charge on required evening and weekend reference desk shifts.
Qualifications:
● MLIS (Masters in Library & Information Science) from ALA accredited school.
● Experience in collection development and basic knowledge of the reference department.
● Experience with computers and emerging technologies with the ability to translate the language of information technology to non-expert users.
● Knowledge of current and progressive trends in reference, technology and library services.
● Ability to work well with people of all ages, races, genders, ethnicity, socio-economic status, etc.
● Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all HTFL staff and departments.
● Exceptional organizational skills.
● Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
● Ability to assume multiple responsibilities with competence and technology problems with patience and perseverance without sacrificing attention to detail.
● Experience with Microsoft Office applications.
● Demonstrate ability to think critically, analyze problems, and develop and implement creative solutions.
● Evidence of a high degree of initiative and versatility, a customer-service focus, and a desire to master new technologies.
● Must provide PA Criminal History Record, Childline Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Fingerprint check prior to beginning employment and when renewals are due
Salary/Wages: Commensurate with experience
